That has got to be the ultimate "Shut up. Sit down" one line.
-
@scrambledpenis - Right - which is why you took the time to reply. Those who 'do not care' simply do not respond, dear. But thanks for serving as a visual aid for the term 'moron'.
-
@PeterFormaini oh my god shut up! no one freaking cares!
-
@Bikerboy1137 - I don;t disagree - but the writers definitely knew the joke was a complete steal. After all, 3 sentences later, Frasier USES the name of the person who first used it!!! :D :D Certainly a signal to those who know that they were perfectly well aware where the joke came from - and were, in a 'backwards' sort of way, acknowledging that they knew it. :D :D Hey - I have used the joke several times in my life. One of my favorites!!!
-
@PeterFormaini it is a possibility that they were not even aware of it being 60 years before their time.. but plagiarism or not, it's an incredibly well-written joke.

I adapted this joke to complain about my neighbour...From the Black Forest, Germany comes the famous Cuckoo Clock, pendulum-regulated, that strikes with a sound like a cuckoo bird's call and typically has a mechanical cuckoo that opens its door and emerges with each note at each quarter hour... that's 96 times a day! If I had one of these clocks right now, this bird would still not be able to beat the number of times my neighbour comes in and out of the apartment!

It always gives me joy when I have occasion to use this line on unsuspecting whiners.

This joke is, of course, a direct plagiarism of Oscar Levant (who crafted it in the 1930s, using the two largest telescopes of the day in place of the electron microscope).
It is a classic - but definitely not original to the Frasier writers.
