Sorry again, this is very quiet - i promise to re-record these quiet vids if i ever get a proper microphone...
But still, please leave comments!
So, here's the script, except for the ad-libbed part at the end:
Am i the only one who always thought Darth Maul's character design was completely stupid-looking and unintimidating?
You know, in that way that you're embarrassed to call yourself a Star Wars fan, because suddenly Star Wars has become THIS?
(beyond the whole Jar Jar business, of course, as well as the far advanced technology in the past that they seem to have lost in the future - that always bugged the SHIT out of me, plus the whole space-time-breaking, plot hole of Vader building 3PO, yet never even showing a hint of recognition. He is STRONG in the FORCE, and he BUILT the robot, is familiar with its every wire and circuit board, being a supposed mechanical genius - there's no way he could NOT recognize 3PO! Even with the new gold plating, on top of some re-tooling by the Lars family - which is the excuse that apologists use most)
Darth Maul is just completely out of place, and he wasn't even that important of a character who barely spoke a word, and died in the first movie, after having only a scant few scenes, while being built up as the main bad-guy in ALL OF THE ADVERTISING!!!
Sure, he killed Qui-Gon Jinn, but Qui-Gon was also pointless, and i hated him, too.
He didn't need to be there. It's supposed to be Obi-Wan who discovers Jake Lloyd (that kid is not Darth Vader, neither is Hayden Christiansen, while we're on the subject).
Obi Wan makes no mention of Jinn to Luke, and instead credits Yoda for training him. Considering the influence Qui-Gon had, as well as doing the majority of the training of Obi Wan, you'd think Obi Wan would have made mention of him right after talking about Anakin and Darth Vader. Especially since he was killed in front of him!
If Alec Obi Wan Guiness (Alec Wan Guinobi?) HAD mentioned a Qui-Gon Jinn to Luke while reminiscing about Anikin, the Clone Wars and that era of his life, i might not be so hostile toward the character who introduced us to "midiclorians". (sp? You all know how much i love science, but this just doesn't fit in the universe of Star Wars! The Force is diminished if it can only affect people who have a certain blood count! there are some stories where magic and the like are needed!)
But then again, i just hate Liam Niesen's face and demeanor... for no reason in particular, he bothers me, and i always want to slap his absolutely featureless face with a hatchet. He could have been a good Odo.
But really - who else was actually enthralled when they first saw Darth Maul, instead of shuddering disgust at the obvious money-making devil character made specifically to sell toys...?
I liked him because he is not a villain who just goes like blah blah blah instead he's quiet and full of mystery. That's what makes a good villain.

@darthdan1000 Except he was a bitch the whole time tat didn`t contribute any sort of horror or terror. He felt like he was just there to die. He didn`t DO anything. Other than fight. Basically an un-named body guard could have filled the exact same role.

People like Darth Maul because of his air of mystery. Think about it, here you have a guy never referenced to before episode 1 who has very little screen time but is a major player in determining the outcome of the entire movie. Add to that a unique weapon, cool fighting skills, and a very memorable look and you create someone who is at least interesting if not dynamic. It's possible Maul could have been more impactful if he lived but it also would have taken away some of his mystery.

@WRK004 An unnamed body guard could have filled the role the exact same way. The fact that he was unreferenced before, had so few scenes, did so little throughout`, was only Palpatines bitch the whole time, was only written into the movie so that he could die to make room for Anakin, just makes him altogether unconvincing as a bad guy. Especially since the only kill he made was the other completely unnecessary, bland character, for whom i had no emotional investment.

you forget, the entirety of Episode I is for money-making with toys... the entire reason to introduce Jar Jar was for the kiddies (and brain dead adults) so they can get the toys for him
Maul had virtually no lines, but the real reason for people liking him is because he's played by Ray Park, and thus does some REALLY COOL martial arts stuff (which is all Ray can do really)...

@THEMrFill I didn't forget, it's one of my main reasons why i hate Darth Maul, hehe.
