Rebekah, 26 months with full trisomy 18.
Rebekah is in Occupational Therapy and working on strengthening core muscles so she can learn to sit up. Rebekah was born with clenched fists, low muscle tone, 'funky' joints, and abnormal palmar creases. Her thumbs and pinky fingers are under-developed. These things make it difficult for Rebekah to weight bear on her arms and grab objects. But she is working hard despite these challenges!
Here she is working with her therapist to sit up and use her arms and stomach muscles to help her. (If you watch closely, you can see her 'double-jointed' elbows!
Trisomy 18 is a condition where there is an extra 18th chromosome. The medical community considers trisomy 18 (Edward's Syndrome) and trisomy 13 (Patau's Syndrome) to be incompatible with life. But doctors don't know everything, and as parents fight for these kids, more and more of them are surviving and thriving. While Rebekah is clearly very delayed, she is most definitely compatible with life, love, and joy! We will never regret giving her the best life we possibly can.
