People with Shy Bladder Syndrome (Paruresis) have trouble urinating in a bathroom if anyone else is nearby. Sometimes they avoid using restrooms altogether, and their lives are seriously disrupted. As a former shy bladder sufferer, I have written a book to help people recover. Called "Bathrooms Make Me Nervous", it offers strategies for coping as well as detailed concrete exercises for full recovery. My goal is to offer hope and inspiration to the restroom-challenged - especially women - and help them Come Out of the (Water) Closet.

  • Worst fear if I a sent to prison in a locked room with total strangers for days of a time.

  • @Scrabbler27, yes, that's probably almost everyone's deepest fear. Be good, and stay away from prison. Carol

  • Is this book for men too?

  • @SilentxMonkey

Yes, almost all the material I provide is equally applicable to men, especially the how-to-cope and recovery techniques I describe.

  • i have trouble going on transport too, planes are difficult, maybe coz i am anxious about how long i will be on the plane and what id i cant go? type thoughts, and what if there is turbulance the movement will make it impossible.

also on trains i find it even more difficult because of the movement and on coaches i find it impossible...any advice for this type of paruresis?????

    1) Learn to urinate on moving vehicles when bathrooms are least likely to be occupied.

    2) Master the self-catheterization technique or use assistive devices ( urinary collection pouch or disposable urine bag)

    3) Count on taking a long time in the restroom. Carry a toiletry bag of items to keep you busy, such as a toothbrush or eye drops. If you think people are watching, make a point of showing you have your toiletries with you as you walk down the aisle.

    4) Desmopressin Acetate,
