Greetings fellow activists.
Facebook seems to have become a rather popular target for attack recently and for good reason: its information sharing policies do indeed warrant concern.

I would like to point out, however, exactly what facebook is. Beyond a massive database of personal and statistical information, it is also one of the few media outlets that we have.

The mainstream media has us FAR outclassed in ability to spread their message. They decide what to put on the air, and for a vast majority, it is the only way the public gets its news. This is why bills such as the NDAA, SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, EEA, and others sneak through the system without so much as a whisper. It is why a vast majority of people do not even know what the NDAA is.

Without the Internet and without sites that promote the quick, easy dissemination of the truth regarding these laws, we would have no internet, because SOPA would have passed. Facebook, Youtube, Twitter. These are OUR media. Do not discount them or their importance to our cause. They are the most effective means for getting the truth out there.

Certainly, shutting down facebook sends a message... but the problem is, WHAT message, exactly, is being sent? Most people on facebook are blissfully unaware of what is going on in the world. For the vast majority of people, shutting down facebook would be seen as a completely random attack and would likely serve to simply label Anonymous as a loose group of kids with nothing better to do.

It will likely flood the mainstream media, yes. But gaining attention is only useful if it comes with the right message. I promise you, they will make SURE the wrong message is sent.

Those that are on the fence about the current situations could very easily be swayed by such an act into believing the lies the powers that be feed them. It could undo what so many of us fight for.

I ask you to reconsider your actions. Turn the tools they have given you against them. Protest their methods by spreading the truth about what is happening. Get people to understand what is truly going on. Get them to look into the issues for themselves. It is the truth that will herald our victory, not attacks on social media.
