Rodrigo Y Gabriela, L. Shankar, R.Trujillo "Orion and Volcano Jam" Greek Theater LA 08/18/2010

Midway into the set they brought out both Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and acclaimed violinist L. Shankar (who co-founded the groundbreaking fusion experiment Shakti in the mid-'70s with John McLaughlin, and who goes by Shenkar these days) for two exhilarating pieces — one centered on Metallica's "Orion," the other a "Volcano Jam" that eventually had Shenkar wailing into a microphone and cueing the others for solos. Shortly after that — once Rodrigo's solo gave way to the Shakti-inspired "Savitri" — they brought out jazz guitar legend Al di Meola, who first wended his way through a spirited synth-tinged solo that suggested where Rod y Gab learned much of their stuff, then joined the duo in yet another dazzling display of six-string mastery.
