  • @EzekielWinnfield I'm afraid making allegations about me does not prove anything about the founding fathers. So how about answering my question? If he meant "...endowed by God," why not just say, "...endowed by God?"

Additionally, I might point out that, no, god belief is not necessarily religious belief.

  • haha i love the o'reilly jab at the end lol :D

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Ok, now you're just in denial. Jefferson was obviously referring to God, which at least means that the laws ideals of this country were based on a religion. And considering the other evidence, he obviously was a Christian.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Now shall I mention the Treaty of Tripoli as well?

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Madison wrote a Constitution that makes no god references or transcendent references of any sort, and in fact has a caveat about not permitting any government job to be dependent on a religious test. To this was later added the Bill of Rights, the first of which clearly stipulates no established religion; not even Christianity. Teacher-led prayer in public schools is a violation of this.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Yes, I know that Benjamin Franklin was a believer at one point, but we are not talking about any old point here. We are talking about when he participated in this country's founding. He was a Christian before he became a deist just as he was a racist before he became an abolitionist.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 George Washington talked about Jesus Christ when addressing Catholics, the Messiah when addressing Jews and the Great Spirit when addressing Cherokees. Would this suggest that he believed in all three? When addressing religiously mixed crowds, he talked about divine providence and fate. This is the significance of the "divine providence" reference in the last line of the Declaration.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Then this same Declaration which so deftly avoids endorsing any particular faith was approved unanimously by every single member of the Continental Congress.

In the quote you use here, assuming he is, indeed, referring to the Bible (and not his abridged version of it), he is making the case for perusing it, not accepting it as fact. Personally, I would make the same recommendation.

  • @lazyperfectionist1 It is arrogant to assume that he must be referring to an intelligence of some sort, let alone some manner of transcendent intelligence, let alone only one, let alone the one from the Bible. It is, in fact, quite reasonable to reach the contrary conclusion. In the Declaration, when it says, "...endowed by their creator..." if "endowed by God" is what he meant, why not say it?
