New government should focus on reducing poverty

Former National Treasurer and University of the Philippines Professor Leonor Briones says the new government coming in after the May 10 national elections should do more to reduce poverty incidence in the country. Briones, in an interview with ANC's Business Nightly, says that contrary to government pronouncements, the ranks of the poor have grown, and their sorry plight, worsened by the economic crisis and natural disasters in recent years. She notes the government needs to focus on creating new jobs and increasing employment opportunities, especially in the most marginalized sectors such as the agriculture and industrial sectors.
