@hallpriest9 I think they might have assumed, since they were always with each other, that Leslie fell in and hit her head and Jess tried to save her, but drowned in doing so and they were just unable to find his body. At least, thats what I'd assume but I'd be quicker to assume that he had just ran off after seeing her drown.

Question: because Jess's family thought he was dead, is it implied they received word of Leslie's death without her name in it, and as such didn't know who was dead? In any case, given the cause of death, they could not both have died; the family would be sure of that.
