Samuel Earnshaw Theorem of 1842 was difinitives and lasted till it was disproved in 1983. The levitron, designed by Roy Harrison, threw Earnshaw's theorem as a be all and end all into the bin for good!
Hmm...since the modern definition of Earnshaw's theorem refers to impossibility of magnetic levitation without servomechanism, superconductivity, etc. Induction caused by the spinning magnet in Levitron could be considered as an exception?
