Shinji never wanted to be part of Nerv, he never wanted to be an Eva pilot... His father uses him,deceives him to fight, to save a Town he never knew... His father never talks to him he even forgets Shinji is there. But Shinji wants to make him proud.
So Shinji tries to escape at all cost...
But then arrives Asuka, and Shinji stops running; he needs to protect her even if she doesn't want him to_But still she doesn't believe in his suicide...
His Suicidal Love...
He just wants to HER to trust him.At least her cuz she is the only one he wants.

I believe your logic.
Shinji cares very deeply for Asuka (Rei is more of a Mother/Sister figure) and would do anything just to please and be with her. True, he can be obbsessional at times, but in the end, he just wants to love and be loved.

@MissCosplaii Yes, and his bound to ayanami is due to his mother issues and neglect brought by his father. I still like NGE and over the years it became more clear that Shinji and Asuka would ''work out'' if both of them didn't had so many issues.
