This was a nationwide issue.....i had the same problem with mine....but i called apple and told them that is was a nationwide issue....and said that other people were getting theirs fixed....and they fixed mine for free!:).....I am absolutely serious....its just the display....
This is a common problem with early to mid 2006 iMacs. A new screen will cost a couple hundred dollars so it's not really worth it IMO. I bought one last year from eBay for only $250 because it had one vertical line across the screen. I bought a mini DVI to HDMI adaptor for $6 and plugged it into my 46" tv. It looks great. You can even make the external screen the main display and you can set the resolution to 1920x1080 (HD).
