Formerly known as Mimi, name changed to Marley, name changed again to Bonnie Belle by Gisele.
Bonnie was adopted from the Osceola Animal Control in February, 2009. It didnt take long for her new owners to realize that she was simply too much to handle. She has been bounced around from home to home probably her entire life, which is common with Border Collies, i.e., everyone wants one, but cant handle their energy level and intelligence.
Much to my surprise, after one week, I learned that Bonnie is fence jumper, which puts her in danger. It is common for Border Collies to try to herd scooters, bikes, motorcycles, cars, trucks and busses! If she successfully jumps my four-foot fence again, she is likely to be injured, or accidentally injure a child in motion.
Bonnie must live in an area that has at least a 5-foot fence, even though a 6-foot fence or higher is preferable. Her owners must ensure that no structures are close to the fence that would allow her to climb onto to make another escape attempt. Bonnie would do best with several acres to run, however, she may herd livestock, including horses, which would prove to be a disaster.
Bonnie would be very happy to live with someone who has a pool and a privacy fence. This would allow her to exercise, yet keep her safe.
Bonnie is crate-trained and house broken, however, she has not been taught basic manners. When in the kitchen, she counter surfs for crumbs! Her high-energy level will pose a challenge for a trainer, however, after extensive exercise, when left on a leash, she can easily be trained, especially if she is trained by a team one correcting the other commanding with treats.
Because Bonnie will probably not even begin to calm down for another year, it will take a special person with the right home to successfully adopt her.
Bonnie is not dog-aggressive, loves people, and loves to give kisses.
Bonnie should not be adopted by a family with children younger than 12 years of age, as she may nip to control and herd.
Bonnie is the truest example of the Border Collie breed, not only in appearance, but in temperament and energy-level, i.e., there is nothing unusual about this Border Collie, therefore, she should be adopted by someone who has experience with the breed. Without the proper environment, exercise, and training, this Border Collie will present a host of problems, which is common in the breed.
