Joan Baez ~ MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW ~ No one is 100% positive about the origins of this song. The general belief is that "Man Of Constant Sorrow" is a traditional American folk song first recorded by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky. The song was originally recorded by Burnett as "Farewell Song" printed in a Richard Burnett songbook in 1913.

  • Joan is the best!! Thanks to have posted it!!

  • You`re welcome, and thank you for your comment! Take care.

  • Thank you very much for posting this truly beautiful version. I also really like the "darker" version recorded on her debut albums...Take care

  • Yes, it is a sad but beatiful song. Many singers have sung it including Dylan. I didn`t know historians have put the date of the song at 1913! Every singer who has sung it have changed some words here and there, but the sentiment of the song remains the same. Take care!

  • @danaraina I think he was joking.

  • @OnkelMickwald Unlike in contemporary popular genres, it's very common in folk music for people to sing a song which is written from the perspective of someone of the opposite gender. Men will sometimes sing songs from a female perspective too, without bothering to change the pronouns (though they might do that too).

  • Joan made the best music in the 20th century. The voice like liquid silver, and the beautiful old ballads, and all without enhancement. She has made my life better and I will never stop listening to her.

  • @OnkelMickwald Brava? :)

  • i first heard this when i was fifteen, loved it then and love it now. amazing song by joan, an amazing performer. thanks for posting it

  • I also like it in "Brother, Where Art Thou"

  • What a divine voice. Love her.

  • But she's not a man... Now I'm confused :-/

  • Kentucky ...state where I was born'd and raised - luv it. Can't work out which version I like the most - this or Judy Collins version with "goin back to Colorado state where I was partly raised.." Both superb - I will not chose.

  • Hermosa canción, hermosa voz.
