The Sea Lamprey Management Program was established to manage sea lamprey abundance in the Great Lakes, thus allowing for restoration of the Great Lakes' fishery. Since the Great Lakes form a portion of the international boundary between the United States and Canada, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission was created in part to develop and implement measures to control sea lampreys. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service along with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada serve as agents of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission according to the Convention on Great Lake Fisheries and the Commission's Strategic Vision and also work in cooperation with various federal, provincial, state and tribal agencies in maintaining sea lamprey abundance at or below acceptable levels.

  • @lmille07 Oh really? Is that why there is no record at all of lamprey in Champlain until 1929 and there is only moderate circumstantial genetic evidence that they may have been here longer? Like I said... do your research. It has nothing at all to do with over fishing.

  • We do, just not eradicate them. The Native Americans use them for food.

  • @HatrXx78 The species is native to the inland Finger Lakes and Lake Champlain in New York and Vermont. Yeah it is native to North America. Do YOUR research.

  • @lmille07 you are right but the lamprey are over populating so we need to keep it down by killing some of them

  • @lmille07 You might want to do some research before making a blatantly wrong statement. The lamprey is not native to north america and was not introduced to the Great Lakes region until the turn of the 20th century.

  • All I am going to say is that if people didn't overfish then there would be no need to kill Lamprey because they have been in the great lakes forever.

  • This video is a great idea and one that shows people how important it is to control lamprey. One question: are there any lamprey predators in the Lakes or the region that can help control the lamprey population as well?
