Trip through Qinghai / Gansu / Inner Mongolia with Martin.

We were stuck in Zhangye for 24h with nothing to do. But Martin had a great idea : let's sit down on the sidewalk and watch Chinese people playing this weird game ! That's how we learnt Chinese chess (xiangqi). I even played against them and got my ass kicked !

  • this game is awesome! Not so weird as regular chess. It actually makes sense (the king is in a palace, there is a river in the middle of the two armies, there is no ultra powerful QUEEN...) I love chess but Xiangqi is so much more poetic in my opinion. Awesome game!

  • i wonder how many years has the set been used

  • My hometown is in Zhangye and this scene is quite common there. I used to spent weekend afternoons watching people playing Chinese Chess on a street.

  • cool game!,check out "Relapse" 2-player board game by Jeffery A. Krueger

  • I have a chess set, but I always play in my room.

  • I live in Zhangye (teaching English) so I enjoyed the video. I've always liked the sight of the old men playing chess on the street, though I've never learned or taken part in it.
