Actually cola625 is correct. The oils from your hands tarnish the bells which causes the sound to change. I was in this group (on the low end) and we normally did wear gloves. For this one song our director (who composed/transposed this arrangement for bells from Mannheim Steamroller) wanted us to be without gloves. The rest of the performance we wore our gloves.
Actually gloves are for yOUR hands, not for the bells. If you look after doing thumb damps and such, the bells get messed up anyway. Just wipe them down and it's fine. Many groups are going to glove-less. You don't HAVE to have them.

because the oil your hands make, can tarnish the bells very easily. the ones we use, you HAVE to wear gloves
