I saw Johnny and his band at the height of his popularity in the mid-70's when he had "Stranger" and other hits on top the country charts. He played a promo concert for KEEN radio in San Jose, CA at the stations annual "Family Fun Day" at the Frontier Village Amusement Park. What I remember most is that it rained hard all through the show and Johnny and the band didn't flinch at all, they played a complete set thru the rain. Real troopers and a real pros.
I've known Johnny since the late 60's, in Bowling Green, KY and Nashville, TN. What a great guy and tremendous country singer. Even now, I'll play his music and remember that smile and his friendly laugh. A perfect voice to be with the angels. Love you man, bh
I used to work at a college radio station in the early 90's in northern CA and was given Johnny's home phone number by one of his sidemen and he was gracious enough to record a promo for me over the phone.....Stranger and Song in the Night are my two favorites of his.....really like his voice. I wish he was still on the radio...
I really enjoyed his music. I remember when I was Divorced and living in Reno that his music use to comfort me and it told me the real story. Johnny RIP
JOHN WAS A PERSONAL FRIEND...HE AND MY DAD GRADUATED FROM DUBLIN HIGH SCHOOL TOGETHER...I LOVE READING ALL THESE COMMENTS ABOUT HIM....MAKES ME FEEL GOOD....THEY DON'T MAKE COUNTRY SINGERS LIKE HIM ANYMORE....I MISS HIM A LOT....GOD BLESS AND REST IN PEACE JOHN

...Johnny's voice would have been perfect ...for 30'&40's romantic ballads.?
As Jim Reeves did before him..!
