A pair of climate refugee polar bears present Air New Zealand with New Zealand's first ever 'Fossil Fool' award. The company was chosen for the award because of their recent eco-branding program which attempts to give their customers the impression that damage to the climate due to air travel can can be responsibly offset by purchasing carbon credits.

Companies like Air New Zealand would have us believe that we can escape climate change with techno-fixes, market mechanisms and offset schemes - all technocratic acrobatics that distract us from the truth: the only real solution to climate change is to keep fossil fuels in the ground.

  • Air NZ is currently testing alternative bio fuels in their aircraft in an attempt to move away from fossel dependance.

  • People complain about emissions from airlines, but being an island filled civilisation there is no practical alternative for travel over ocean. Yet these same people drive around in their cars all day when they're too damn lazy to walk.

I think it's great that Air NZ is introducing this carbon iniative. With an industry that is a slave to the use of fossel fuels it's great to see that they are trying to improve the inevitability of a polluting byproduct.

  • How long is a ferry ride between Auckland and Wellington vs. a flight? Because for businesspeople who are on daytrips to Auckland from Wellington, taking a daylong ferry ride isn't an option when they have to show up to work the next morning.

  • Those who can't handle taking the ferry can explain to their children that they'd rather have a cheap flight than avert a disaster that is set to cause the extinction of 'most' of life on earth.

  • The amount of unnecessary flights taken between Auckland and Wellington (and the rest of the country) is unconscionable. Air NZ's fraudulent claims of environmental responsibility are the issue here - and It is the Marketing of this lie that produces the problem which manifests itself in a public unable to make informed decisions about how to take responsibility for their greenhouse gas emissions first and how to eliminate these emissions them second.

  • As much as Air Travel spits a lot of CO2 in the air, how do you want New Zealanders to get around? They live in two islands in the middle of the South Pacific. The nearest land mass to them is 1200 miles away, and that's to ANOTHER island in the South Pacific. Unless you can find a way to build a 6500 mile bridge to Asia and North America, I wouldn't be saying anything.

  • you and your breatheren to howl from the nearest roof top, because someone can't Dis-prove an un UNPROVEN hypothesis?

As for the Tyndal centre...go back and read the research documentation, it quite clearly states that the ASSUMPTION made is that radiative forcing is warming, it takes no account of lower level cloud behaviour, nor the natural feedback of diurnal temperature variation.

Your argument is full of holes, at least I can show you the observations that prove mine.

  • "One person flying in an airplane for one hour is responsible for the same greenhouse gas emissions as a typical Bangladeshi in a whole year."

    - Beatrice Schell, European Federation for Transport and Environment, November

    2001.

15 million Bangladeshi people live in the region that is set to become flooded as a result of global warming by the year 2050.

  • Air Travel is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide in the world, thats a fact. Emissions from aircraft are especially problematic because of the height at which they are emitted and the particularly noxious mix of gases, making them 2.7 times more damaging than the effect of their carbon dioxide alone (known as radiative forcing). (Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research). Tell me of one peer reviewed article that conclusively proves climate change ISN'T man-made....
