can someone please tell me how i can get the phone onto silent profile, when i hold down the hash button it says its on silent but it still makes a noise when i receive calls or messages, HELP!!!

Look please can someone explain 2 me.
I download a lot of music and pictures from the computer too the phone.
But like everyday i have 2 restart the phone all the time so i can download.
And that's because i can't download if i don't do that and that get's on my nerves.
Because that means all my personal things will be gone.
And the at the mobile screen it just shows up something like '' this memory stick is already using please try to wait''
