A popular campaign in the St. Louis area has legislators throughout the state "Standing with Stan." Senate Communications correspondent Steph Reed has the story.
A Cardinals baseball player from 1941 to 1963, Stan Musial's accomplishments both on the field and off earned him respect throughout the state.
Ninety-seven legislators from the House and Senate signed a letter encouraging President Barack Obama to award Stan Musial with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor.
Senator Eric Schmitt of Glendale is a leader in the effort, and explains why he decided to get involved.
In the letter, legislators request that Stan Musial be recognized for his accomplishments in both the athletic and civic realms. Musial contributed his time, money, and name to charitable and community causes throughout the St. Louis area, the state, and the nation.
This is not the first time the Legislature has taken efforts to honor Stan Musial. In 2000, Musial was inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians and his bust stands here in the capitol rotunda.
Senator Timothy Green of St. Louis, who also lent his support to the effort says that Stan Musial's legacy reaches throughout the state.
With the letter on track to the White House, lawmakers await to hear if their request to honor a Missouri icon will be heard. Reporting for the Missouri Senate, I'm Steph Reed.
