The first 7 months of a three year old autistic boy's journey toward engagement with his parents and others using the Floortime method as taught by PLAY Project. The goals of this method are: following the child's lead; that is, watching what he loves to do and joining his interest lovingly and respectfully (this can mean slapping a wall if he slaps a wall, flapping with him, spinning or helping him spin if he loves that; squishing a ball with him if he loves that -- but doing it in the same manner as he does, showing him that you accept him and you are really with him; being sensitive to his sensory profile, i.e. talking softly or dimming lights or reducing clutter, etc.; and using joyful emotional affect when playing. This is not about directing the child to what you want him to do (except safety). Lovingly joining in the child's area of interest, and matching his pace, encourages the child's ability and desire to engage, thereby laying a solid understanding and foundation for communication and intellectual development (the same way a typical developing child learns).
