In this segment Robert asks the Nuclear Regulatory Commission if they have done any health studies on the risks of people living within 7,000 feet of a nuclear power plant as well as the economic consequences of a nuclear power plant being located in such close proximity to residential real estate.

Reasonably straight forward questions posed to the officials apparently are too hot to handle ... in public and so an NRC official is directed/volunteers to speak to Robert outside the public meeting thus preventing the discussion/answers to Robert's questions from being documented on the Federal Record.

A court reporter documented every word spoken... in this meeting.

John Russell citizen and recent District 5 Congressional Candidate makes some very important points as well that will appear on the Federal Record. Principle point made by Mr Russell being that building additional nuclear power plants will be a disaster of monumental proportion from an economic standpoint. Nuclear energy in addition to all of the other negatives (Huge Capitol Cost, Long Time Horizons for Construction, Declining and increasingly costly sources of fuel, costs of nuclear waste storage/processing that span by some estimates nearly incalculable time-frames calculated in centuries not years or decades.)

Notwithstanding the fact that competing alternatives for generating electrical power are nearly in parallel cost with fossil fuel at the time of this writing and are without the environmental drawbacks of nuclear power.

It is up to the citizens of this country to stand up for logic and sound economic judgment and direct policy toward avenues that will grow our overall economy rather than being a cannibalistic/parasitic drain on our economy. Distributed power generation IS the ONLY answer to solving America's energy demands.

When coupled with the first order effort of energy conservation will place America in the pre-eminent position from a global economic perspective.

Another link that should be of major interest is a New York Times article from 1988 discussing the cost and monumental problems associated with the de-commissioning of Nuclear Weapons Facilities AS WELL AS Civilian Nuclear Power Plants in the United States. http://www.nytimes.com/1988/10/31/us/dying-nuclear-plants-give-birth-to-new-p...

  • "I am going ask my colleagues to NOT address that right now." WHAT???? The outrage of this corporatist controller from the NRC is beyond belief!

So instead one of his colleagues is going to "talk" to Robert outside and OFF THE RECORD!

THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION SHOULD BE RENAMED THE UTILITY INDUSTRY NEWNUKES RAILGREASING COMMISSION for all the integrity of process that is shown with THIS alone!

Robert should have said NO I want my question answered right here and ON THE RECORD!

  • Nuke power unlike how it is sold to the public will produce many multiples FEWER employment and business opportunities than will a policy of DISTRIBUTED POWER GENERATION.

We will be so FAR BEHIND Germany and the rest of the world when it comes to producing energy that the entire U.S. Economy will NEVER be able to catch up.

I am certain that most people will understand the total consequences of going down the wrong path as a nation on ENERGY!

  • would you please get current? so much has happened since this posting...

  • I live less than a mile from a nuclear power plant in southport, nc. I've lived here 20 years and can tell you they do take great pains to keep the citizens safe. tests are run daily on water and soil.

As far as jobs, thousands of jobs were generated right here for it. Yes, local folks were trained at our community college.

Property values did not go down because of the plant. They have gone up considerably since the plant was built, but that may be because we are so close to the ocean.

  • This effort should not be about the outrageous additional charge to build the proposed Levy County Nuke Plant in the future, but rather WHO determines U.S. Energy Policy? The people or the utility industry? The fact is NUKE power IS grossly UNECONOMICAL when compared to even current and emerging alternatives like solar, wind and wave energy. The TOTAL COST which is NEVER revealed by NUKEPWR proponents is the determinant.

  • Nice Job John... Robert raised important points. Who wil care about public health if we don't?

The moderator asks his colleagues NOT to address Robert's questions???? WOW How corrupt is that?
