The "B" designator is not diesel engine, but the "-50" designator in the series designator is. What the "B" designator is is the design generation. The first Cargostar was introduced for 1970 1/2. The current Cargostar design started production in 1972 (1973 model year).

The "5" in the tens place in the "1850" represents mid-range diesel power (cf. DT-466, Cat 3208 or Detroit Diesel 6V-53). A "3" in the same place would mean light-duty diesel (cf. Perkins 6.354 or Detroit Diesel 3-53 or 4-53). Likewise, a "7" in the tens spot means heavy-duty diesel power (cf. Detroit Diesel 6-71, 8V-71 or Cummins' various 855 six-bangers).
