Released in 1996 on Nothing Interscope.

I had a friend take me to his concert the night of this video and decided to make a review. This album was produced by Trent Reznor and is probably Manson's darkest and most well put together.

The Good : This album is very well written and produced. A very well thought out album in terms of marketing, imagery, lyrical content and sound. It successfully places the listener in Manson post apocalyptic world. This album makes many intelligent and thought provoking statements on American culture, idol worship, religion and individuality. The music on here finds Manson at his most passionate and visceral. Very over the top and in your face.

The Bad : A lot of the messages on this album get distorted. Some people say it promotes drug use, satanism and glorifies death, when it fact it's speaking out against it. The depressing atmosphere on here has had negative effects on some more sensitive listeners and has even been blamed for suicides and massacres. The music is not the most complex or intricate, focusing more on atmosphere than complex song arrangements. Vulgar language is overused. This album is also responsible for spawning so many misguided goth kids. The over the top, angry tone will also turn off some people. Over dramatic.

In conclusion, few albums have ever provoked such a strong reaction in society. A frequently misunderstood album, that has been unjustly blamed for many tragedies. Manson has always said he is willing to be Americas scapegoat and it should be happy to have him so America has someone to blame for all it's problems. The hateful and nihilistic attitude is intended to reflect Americas true personality, one that frowns on free thinkers, shuns true individuals and also glorifies vapid celebrities, serial killers and war. An America that is superficial, ignorant, selfish, ugly, narcissistic and self destructive.

Definitely a must have for metal / industrial fans. This album has spawned a million copy cat bands and has had an enormous impact on the musical community. Not the most complex peice of music, but the album has surprising depth and intelligence. The distorted music and hateful atmosphere is bound to turn off some listeners, but will also be what some will love.

4.2/5

  • I really like Beautiful People back in jr high.

  • All the bad kids did.

  • Best Manson album ever!!! Pure hatred towards everything and everyone! FUCK MANKIND!!!!!!!!!

  • Agreed.

  • by the way 4:00 to 4:30 was brilliant! I never actually realised that in the beginning he wanted to get to heaven when he was a worm (heaven being the celebrity life) the third part is like him realising its fake and maybe he was best off being a worm

  • It's an album that's pretty open to interpretation, but that's what I got out of it after listening to it a million times. It has a vague underlying story.

  • Remember though, in the trilogy of the three albums, holy wood came first and then mechanical animals and ended with Antichrist superstar. The actual STORY starts with holy wood

  • Also brian kick the co-founder Scott Putesky out of the band. They didn't treat him right. Use only four of his songs that he wrote.

  • I really love your review. Antichrist Superstar is his best album in my opinion. ^_^

    Stay Awesome!

  • i for one think mechanical animals was his peak :)

  • @YoureWrongImRight if you'd be interested, I'd love to hear a review from you on Holy wood or Golden age of grotesque

  • Manson in the album reffers to himself as a Worm u dergoing a metomorphasis throughout the album. The other reason i love the album is because you can find some really cool stuff on the cover and in the booklet like a diagram of a worm to angel metamorphasis and medical diagrams. And there are romen numerals on the sleeve, if you multiply the numbers together and then flip the numbers upside down it reads the word HELL

  • To the guy who made this video thank you, but the album isnt only about america but its part of a three part series of concept albums, all of them very autobiographical, the albums are antichrist superstar, mechanical animals and holywood, i love them all but this one is my fav because it tells you about his child hood and how he was raised as a christian and stuff, but he is slowly realizing that he is not going to be controlled by religion or society thus becoming the antichrist superstar.

  • Bought this CD back in 1996. Saw Manson live in 1997. His peak.

  • To the dude who made this vid, THANK YOU. Finally someone who understands his music and it's meanings. I like how you just explained it how you saw it, instead of preaching on it. I learned a few things too so thanks:) ps iv never seen him live and want too but iv heard he's awful now.. Is it true?? Someone please tell me different:/

  • antichrist superstar is the name that i associated with manson before i heard of holy wood or mechanical animals. beautiful people, dope show are pretty good but the non singles are awesome on a different level.
