LayerWise applied Additive Manufacturing (AM) to produce an award-winning Titanium total lower jaw implant reconstruction. To treat a senior patient's progressive osteomyelitis of almost the entire bone, surgeons opted for such a complete implant the first time ever. LayerWise specialists printed the patient-specific implant design incorporating articulated joints and dedicated features. The complex reconstruction has been implanted successfully. It restored the patient's facial esthetics and allowed her to regain her speech within hours.

Forgive my possibly ignorant question: but how does strength of this compare to something forged the traditional way? Are there any drawbacks to this method?

Hey, the implant is made of Titanium which features higher strength than other metals. The additive manufacturing technology offers nearly unlimited freedom of shape compared to traditional traditional metalworking methods. Additive manufacturing is a suitable method for producing these patient-specific implants. Considering the shorter surgery period and partient recovery time, it is an affordable method as well. Regards, Rob

Congrats guys! Next step: Build Wolverine's skeleton ;).

How long did the fabrication process take? What is the degree of precision on this jaw, micrometers? This is just beautiful engineering that eased up someone's life. Superb.

My cousin apparently needs to get his entire lower mandible removed! I'm shocked. He has tumors that are growing extremely fast in the bone, and I can't find any videos on surgeries and recoveries of the actual patients with a replacement jaw!

I love the concept, however there are many details missing and youtube does not permit full link based discussions of any topic.
