Gor Mahia football club is wearing the proverbial smile all the way to the bank thanks to Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Raila today gave Kogallo a personal donation of 2 million shillings to push the team through the local football league. During the presentation, Raila challenged community clubs to nurture a solid fan base to attract sponsors. He also challenged KPL teams to up their performances in order to woo fanatical support. Raila also touched on the National team Harambee Stars, asking Kenyans to be patient with them saying recent poor results should be perceived as football lessons with room for improvement. He however, steered clear of controversy surrounding the exclusion of key players for the return match against Nigeria, saying such decisions were within the discretion of the technical bench. Gor Mahia is one of the most popular clubs in the country and is the most decorated with 14 league titles and the only Kenya club ever to have won the Africa Cup Winners Cup.

  • Such donations in cash are suspect. A donation of such magnitude should be in cheque form!

  • Now that the PM has made the donation, the Gor mahia players should be paid their dues. It is a pity to hear that the players are still owed a lot of money.

  • You have good point.

  • a bad example as corruption begins with such huge donations..now every other insignificant MP from western will copycat PM and start demanding loyalty money to donate to clubs.

  • Private donation with taxpayers money to a soccer club when Kenyans are dying of hunger & some rendered homeless due to government ineptitude. How can Kenyans watch soccer when their children are dying of hunger?? This is nothing but a cheap political gimmick to appease fans of a particular community.

  • @freegastanker1 : The PM could have given it privately like you but who would have known that Gor received a donation of 2m. Would that not have made it so easy for the guys to just share the money and keep their mouths shut?

  • it is his personal donation so he can give the money to whoever he pleases. The PM has always been a fan of Gor

  • he couldnt find a cheque.keep it simple dude.

  • good to see him support the sportsmen!this guy is really active.he seems to be reppin everywhere!

  • The man loves sports especially soccer so I see nothing wrong with that. What people need to do is put their money where their mouths are and do something positive for your people. Donate to a school, a hospital, adopt an orphan child etc and stop depending on the government to do everything for you...
