Welding on a Fuel Tank

Don't do this a home. Actually, don't do this. Why, my dear husband takes on these projects is beyond me. It sure isn't for the money. He never charges enough. I know this because, people pay more than what we bill them. Go figure.

My dad is 74 yo and been a welder for about 50. He has also used this technique for welding ga and diesel tanks. He suggested "flashing" the gas that is being exhausted before starting the weld to be sure that it is not combustible. He either takes a lit cutting torch and holds it out in the streanm of exhaust coming out of the tank or strikes his first arc near the exhaust. he uses argon if available.

DO NOT DO THIS! I know someone who died thinking car exhaust gas is inert, IT ISN'T!! This video should be removed before someone dies trying this.

It's a diesel tank. . If it was gas tank my husband would put water in it. Since this video, he has done this many more times. So far, God Willing, all is well.

Hello Anne, I have also done this several times but I fill the tank with argon gas if it's aluminum. If it's a steel or stainless tank I'll fill it with 75/25 mix gas. It not only crowds the oxygen out, it makes it weld better. I also have the problem of not charging enough for the jobs I do. Must be a welding thing, or the challenge is the pay. Who knows.

We've used a CO2 fire extinguisher to purge the fuel tank prior to welding.

This isn't worth the risk, so stop doing it. Your insurance company would have a field day with this should it take out the garage/house/operator. It isn't cute, it isn't cool, and even if you backpurge with inert gas, it's still high risk.

Ask husband to post this on a WELDING FORUM instead of Youtube and see what comments he gets!

Charging a bit more to do things SAFELY, like clean out the tank with non-flammable means, blow it dry, THEN backpurge it, is the right thing to do.

Mayby you should mention that if your vehicle is running rich. There will be un burned fuel pumped in the tank and ....well... um ... He wont have to worry about doing jobs any more...... except organ donor...

@fitthefeck I've heard dry ice works well to flush O2 from the tank.
