Good thinking but the given that they are moving physical pieces the system will have to be very sophisticated and expensive (maybe radio transmitter technology and microchips on every piece)...

...the system will have to recognize real moves from say accidental falling or accidental slide of a piece... simplicity always wins over complexity unless the advantages are significant.
