Saint Ramanuja declared that Vaishnavism belonged to everyone. He made the Panchamas (those people who had been relegated to the fringes of society) Vaishnavites. Many of the great Hindu Saints in South India (alwars and nayyanars)were not Brahmins by birth.

there is good news in sight....
From June 2008, get ready to welcome a fresh batch of Dalit temple priests (I wish my Hindu brothers BEST OF LUCK - I'm confident that they will do a terrific job!)
This is in line with a court ruling that all Hindus, whatever their caste, would be allowed to become priests & conduct temple rituals if they were "qualified". This is how the caste system is really supposed to work (not by birth, but by qualities and karma). All Hindus are one.

it's a shame if you indeed experienced this....such ppl bring a bad name to entire Hinduism...they are the real 'untouchables' of society and they should be chucked out of civilized society immediately. ('I am partial to none and I'm equal to everyone' - God has said this in Bhagavad Gita (9th chapter)
