I am trying to watch every doctor who episode. Ever. In order. Which means I haven't even seen the new series yet. I'm still on the fourth doctor.

We are the Timelords, billions of years on evolution and then we master time itself! We have evolved not to Hate (finally). We become the Timelords and travel around ensuring time travel isn't used to create paradoxes. Timelords are as alien to us as we are from Zoo-plankton, their concept of time would confuse us, so when The Doctor says Gallifrey Burned long ago, he likely referring to his own History. He protects the earth to ensure that the Timelords can exist - and die protecting creation

Poor doctor. He has to keep going, keep saving the universe. If he stops, then he will have time to think of what he has lost.
