8mm footage of a family outing on the Catherine M. Wedmore in 1940. A similar outing commemorating these frequent family events was held on July 20, 2008. The CMW is still working the bay.

  • It's fortunate this video was ever made. The Catherine was the only New Haven boat that made it back to harbor in the great 1938 hurricane of 21 September. Chan Wedmore, age 58, then captain, did not like what he saw on the barometer that morning, and ordered his crew to pull in the gear.

    They then made for the harbor at full speed and backed into the slip to protect the boat. A crew member was killed by flying debris while securing her, one of 700 to perish in that storm.

  • Boy oh boy, that's beautiful to see. Thanks for posting this footage from Long Island Sound. Please be sure to save the actual 8mm film footage. The reason this color film hasn't faded badly (yet) is that it's probably made with Eastman Kodak's Kodachrome film. Every other kind of amateur color film footage from this time has faded into oblivion, and the actual footage is a beautiful artifact.
