@JimTLonW6 I didn't know that but I find that one of the great things about Monty Python is that you without knowing those things its still hilarious. Then when you do find out why they made that sketch you say "oohh well that makes sense." and it's even better. It's just terrific!!

For new readers - at the time when this sketch was originally made the nationalised Gas Boards were notorious for their inability to make deliveries and service calls without involving huge numbers of staff and wasted journeys on account of not having the correct items.
