An extended research laboratory at Morriston Hospitals Accident and Emergency Department was officially opened by Health Minister Edwina Hart AM [Monday, 14 September, 2009].

The main focus of the Clinical Haemostasis and Biomarker Research Unit is to study the clotting properties of blood to help identify patients who are more likely to suffer from strokes and heart disease.

The research concentrates on detecting early changes in clot structure in patients, who because of other medical conditions, poor lifestyle, or family history, are most at risk. The new extended laboratory will include two full-time non-clinical researchers from Swansea University's School of Medicine and £300,000 of research equipment from its School of Engineering.
