What happens if you accidentally push the double lock button when struggling with the person?? You need the key to open before you can put them on! Not a good design at all.

@geonerd Good thing that's not what they need to protect against - It's to make the suspect more comfortable. Have you ever been cuffed with old-style handcuffs? Bare metal + skin in a position where they will often rub is not comfortable. The only way the injury you're talking about could happen: The officer does it on purpose. I don't think that they would do something like that on purpose.
