One way to check to see if a mass air flow sensor has gone bad is by tapping on the engine when it's running to see if it stumbles. Find out how to remove a mass air flow sensor to check if it has gone bad with help from an ASE-certified master automobile technician in this free video on mass air flow sensors.

  • i have a 99 mustang with the 3.8 motor in it and i have the obd2 code coming up po122 for the tps sensor...is there some way to adjust it i put the new one in and code keep's coming up....

  • so if its broken then it is bad? right??

Vacuum hoses are rotten. There are a bunch of them. Leaking vacuum hoses cause unmetered air flow. The reason it runs better when the MAF is unplugged is that it's running a default value for MAF, calculated using RPM, TPS and HO2S inputs.

Take some time tracking ALL of the vacuum hoses, you'll find the problem.

  • I have a 1990 Ford Aerostar 4.0L V6 and my engine is running very bad and lean, but when I unplug the mass air flow sensor, it runs great. So I got a new mass air flow sensor, but it still is running very bad. What do you think is wrong?

  • my car revs up to 5k rpm and climbing by itself i turn it off and turn it back up and still revs up pretty high by itself could this be my maf sensor? i have a nissan 92 240sx ka24de. i also hit the gas but wont do anything.

  • can a bad maf sensor cause your vechical to shut down while driving or parked i have a 97 bonneville and autozone did a diagnostic and the maf sensor came back code P0102 can this be the real problem? thanks
