The tax tea parties were also a flashmob event of sorts. The tea parties did not have a cohesive message but they were numerous and that made them half successful.

I think social networking has a long way to go before we harness/channel the power of socially networked gatherings. If you know the people who show up, or don't mind talking to strangers, they are really really fun!

  • I have been "off the Tube" for a while, and I thought I'd check in. Glad to see you're still posting! It's interesting that people claim online social networking and cell phone texting are pushing us apart, but we can't resist the urge to gather in-person. I think maybe it's genetic. Some kind of throwback to our tribal ancestors? Oh, and "belly dancing"?!?

  • if flashmobs can be organized for pillow fights, what can be done constructively? I realize the power of social networks and recently started a page to bring the nanotech community together in an open source movement. we are far from critical mass.

  • Facebook/myspace/youtube/twitter/etc is governmental profiling at its finest.

jk, I doubt that they're that brilliant... :p

  • This is all too much for me. Facebook, myspace, youtube, twitter. I wish I lived in the 1800's. I would move to walnut grove and marry laura ingalls. :)

  • That's true. I'll bet there have been a lot more conventions since the internet came into the mainstream. Think how many different kinds there are now....comics, Star Trek, Star Wars, Motorcycles, Dancing, Writer's and Artist cons too. At this point I'll bet anything that you like, there's an annual social gathering for it!

  • Haven't seen ya' in a while! Either you haven't made many vids or I've been sleeping for a while. In any case, I dig the dark hair. And I find the concept of flashmobs fascinating in some cases and terrifying in others. I was terrified by the tea parties, which were basically a good idea gone bad due to political hijacking.
