This is the video cutup I used for my presentation on our 5-3 Defense at the Glazier Clinic. Most of the individual plays are posted here separately - go to those for coaching points & comments on each play.

  • @coacht93 I agree with you, but I'm not sure why you said it the way you did. We do NOT teach our ends to box, and I just rewatched the entire video and I did not see any instances of our guys boxing. We teach them to stay square and keep their outside arm and leg free - they don't always do it perfectly, but it is what we strive for. And we do try to get penetration and disrupt the backfield with all 5 guys every play - although we do want them to stay under control.

  • For little league Freshman (3rd - 4th grade) or JV (5th - 6th grade), I'm in full agreement with the 5-3 defense. However, not to be critical, but the only thing I saw that must be emphasized is the DE's need to stay square to the line when getting up field. Ends in a 5-3 cannot be box ends. If that play bounces outside, that end now needs to do a 180 and chase. He needs to stay square and keep his outside arm and leg free. In a 5-3, the D-line must GET UP FIELD every play!
