He puts feelings in his work.
Imo, that's something you are not able to do.
To be complicated doesn't make you a good composer.
Go "pum-pum-pum" yourself. That's stupid...

@MichaelMartinTheShow In our post-classical world who's to say what is "serious" music? I'm sure Philip Glass and his followers take him music very seriously.

@nevertheless123 I would actually disagree with you on this to some extent. Pacing of harmony, and slight variations in harmonic language can sometimes pack just as much an emotional punch as other "serious" musics. After all, it could be said that Mozart made a "cottage industry" out of the I-IV-V chord and slight variations.

Also, Glass's music has paved way to a much more serious form of music called "Post-Minimalism" which is more sophisticated.

what this video points out, whether Totley intended or not (I really like his playing btw) is that Glass has made a cottage industry out of nothing.

There is very little content in his music. Its okay as long as it is not called classical or "serious" music.

Great that you brought up Picasso. Yes indeed, if Picasso draws with a pencil, its incredible Have you seen his drawings? You know that he painted in tradional styles first?

And Stravinsky has composed beautiful neoclassical pieces like Pulcinella.

Yes it really matters if you want to call yourself a classical composer.
If you want to be called a pop musician all that matters is if it "sounds good"

From that respect Glass is just a pop musician with the cloak of a classical composer.

Who cares if he can compose a tonal piece in the conventional style? That's not what defines good music or a good musician.

It's like saying if Picasso could not paint something well in the conventional style, then he's not a good painter.

Stop being a snob and get over your subjective measures of what a good musician is to you.

His work is beautiful according to pretty much... everyone, and that's all that matters, and that's what makes him good.

I love the bit at 2:35
Not sure if that's part of an actual Philip Glass piece but it sounds amazing
