A world champion athlete and local dignitaries attended the official opening of Opal 1, the newest and most modern student accommodation at the University of Abertay Dundee.
The new 500-bed building cost £20 million and was built by Ocon, a construction company specialising in student accommodation. This is the first project the organisation has completed in Scotland.

You better hope you never need anything fixed. Because it took them TWO MONTHS to replace the light in my bathroom because it had to come from Poland :S
I was left to shower in the dark and after 6 weeks was given a battery operated click-light to stick to my door, which went dead very quickly and fell off my door. Worst accommodation ever. No privacy due to staff wandering through the flat without explanation. and the farce where they attempted to stop visitors entirely and abertay resolved it

ALSO. The kitchen units are made from chipboard, and get water damaged so easily. The internet is not wireless so you have to be plugged in all the time. Carpets are ridiculous. Doors are a joke, lock when you leave your room occasionally. THE STAFF are rude, often i've woken up to people just entering and walking through the flat with no explanation of what they're doing and no prior notice. And no ID either. Don't live here. I've not felt comfortable in my own flat since move in day

RUBBISH. It's not "state of the art" at all. The heating operates on a button you have to click every 2 hours to keep it on. The walls have marks all over them. the beds are AWFUL and I actually have woken up with small bruises because springs have been digging into me all night. You can hear everything, the flat above you and next door. Bathroom's are generally all right if you don't have a wet room, which floods CONSTANTLY, because the floors aren't dipped.

Also to add, a friend of mines hot water broke in their shower room and they couldnt wash for over a week.
I am not an Abertay basher but I do believe for the money that you pay you are recieving absolute crap. Do not stay at Opal unless you do not value things for money.

As a first year I stayed at the Opal halls of residence. From first glance they look like a very nice modern and up to date place to stay. This is most definately not the case. On moving in it took me over 4 and a half hours to be shown my room, for the first week none of the electric hobs were working, therefore none of us could actually cook any food. The appliances that we were given were of the cheapest kind. For example the toaster broke within the first week of having it.
