Aviation lawyer on Swissair plane goes down in Nova Scotia

The MD-11 filled with 229 passengers and crew, was flying from New York to Geneva. For sixteen minutes the aircraft was reported to have been on fire before making its final and fatal plunge from the night sky into the cold waters just off Peggy's Cove.

The TSB (Canada's Transportation Safety Board) later determined that flammable material propagated a fire that spread rapidly, to the extent that it degraded the cockpit environment, which led to the loss of control of the aircraft. The fire was believed started by electrical arcing in a bundle of wires, as evidenced by globs of molten conductor found on the wire remnants retrieved from the wreckage. Baum Hedlund represented several families in this crash.
