Two Injured In Wolf Creek Accident

A California truck driver alerted authorities and waded through a creek bed in the predawn hours Saturday to assist an injured man after a car veered off of Highway 2, struck a power pole and plunged into the water. Paul Tetreault, 60, was crossing the bridge over Wolf Creek west of Syracuse when he saw a bloodied man waving his arms on the roadside. It was too dark to see the car about 30 yards away, but the driver told Tetreault it was surrounded by water and a passenger was still inside. Tetreault called 911 for help and descended the steep, heavily overgrown embankment and waded into the murky water to find the man. The passenger told Tetreault he was in severe pain. "I'm a Vietnam vet, so I know people go into shock. I stayed with him and talked to him. He was having trouble breathing, so I kept with him," Tetreault said.




Tetreault's initial 911 call described the location as west of the state weigh station on Highway 2, so Nebraska City fire and rescue were dispatched. Emergency responders knew something was wrong when they reached as far west as Dunbar without seeing Tetreault¹s truck. Don Flessner of Otoe County Emergency Management heard a 911 dispatch about Wolf Creek and was able to direct rescuers to the bridge west of Syracuse.
