But yes, as your point shows, the four color theorem doesn't really apply directly to maps in general, only planar maps (can be drawn on a plane) with contiguous regions (e.g. Michigan is technically not allowed)

I guess that depends on whether or not the plane meets itself on the other end or not! If LA, AR, OK, and NM extended across the globe and met together at one point, then we would need 5 colors. Math is so much fun!!

But LA, AR, OK, NM are not all adjacent, so you can color two of them the same color.
Google the four color theorem for planar graphs.
