Womble takes us through the steps he took in learning to walk on his back legs.

Again when trying this, don't spend too long training the rat each day, 5 minutes a day is long enough and even at that they are clever enough to pick this up in a few days. This is important too to make sure they are not over-fed during training.

Also don't be in too much of a hurry to increase the step count, take time to get the rats used to the trick and it will make increasing the steps later easier and more stable. Best to basically let your rat dictate how quickly they learn it.

Finally, I'm really not overly happy with this video so i may "re-do" it at some stage, so apologies if its not helpful. More coming soon.

  • cute!

  • @AppleJacksAlex If they don't take a treat while out, put it in their cage for them to try later. It takes some rats a while to stop needing to "taste test" everything (I had one that never stopped). Usually once they've established a certain food is safe they'll be more willing to take it when they're out. Also keep trying new foods from time to time--if you find can find one food they love, teach them the word "treat" and soon they'll be excited about anything you call a treat.

  • Rice Krispies is a very good treat for training as it does not fill them up fast. Kashi is also good but more filling.

  • To everyone who keeps asking, I've seen someone use honey bunches of oats with (insert nut variety).

  • hat is a good treat?

  • what are you using to treat?

  • @rcfan29 I may not know what this person feeds them, but try Cheerios, or other unsweetened cereal.

  • @winchesterntk1 I know a lot about hamsters, I personally prefer mice and rats though. You probably can't teach them to do a lot... Hamsters aren't as smart as rats (no offense).

  • That's so cute when he started to walk!! =3

  • @winchesterntk1 (continuation comment) as for teaching your hamster this, i would figure its the same as teaching a rat.
