Boiling a lobster is practically as easy as it sounds. Here's how to do it perfectly every time.

To complete this How-To you will need:

A large pot
A lobster
A few bay leaves
Salt and pepper
A colander
A sheet pan
A stove top

Step 1: Fill the pot with water, cover it, and bring it to a boil.

Step 2: Remove the claws and tail. Twist them off while the lobster is still alive—you want to boil them separately, as the tails will take longer to cook.

Step 3: Season the water. Throw a couple of bay leaves into the pot and season with salt and pepper.

Step 4: Add the lobster to the pot. Tails take about seven minutes to cook, and claws take about five minutes, so put the tail in two minutes before you add the claws.

Tip: You don't need to remove the thick rubber bands around the claws before boiling—they won't melt.

Step 5: Strain the lobster. Turn off the heat, remove the pot, and pour the lobster into a colander in the sink.

Step 6: Let the lobster cool. Put it on a sheet pan for a few minutes.

  • My mate just told me (hes a Professional chef and trained in Paris - which i guess means hes good?) that this video is utter bollocks

Lobster is cooked whole, in boiling salt water and time is dependant purely on the size / weight

From a personal point of view and even a meat eater I think pulling a living creature apart, and throwing it back on the sink, is even more "sadistic" than killing it quickly in boiling water.

  • you will need:

    A lobster

NO SHIT YOU NEED A LOBSTER, WHAT ELSE WILL YOU BOIL, YOUR PENIS?

  • absolutely NO clue on how to cook a lobster! and you cant cook an alrady dead lobster,,,unless you really want to be very sick!

  • its said while the lobster is still alive...

  • YOu forgot the water -.-'

  • the crab would pinch you if you tried to rip it arm off.Just buy a dead lobster. You are inhumane to rip it off.RUDE!

  • @chapmasi As a chef in training I can back this up. Its best to throw it in live.Unlike humans, lobsters have a very small nervous system, so they won't feel much. And breaking it apart causes water to get into the shell, not only getting rid of all the good juice and flavor in the meat, but also getting water in the shell and making eating it an even bigger mess. It's best to take a live lobster and simply boil it whole in hot water without seasoning.

  • WTF That guy ripped the lobster apart like it was no damn big deal. DAMN!

  • Doesn't rubber bands contain chemicals that leech out when heated?

  • Lobsters scream, or so I was told by my grandmother lol.

  • @Chulva How is this being self-righteous? And of course I know animals eat meat and so do humans! I thought I made that clear enough! I'm just saying, put it in ice water or something so it goes to sleep before you rip it apart! I'm not saying people should stop eating lobster. And did you know that stress affects the taste too? And the 'it's been done for years' is a lame excuse. Things change.

  • @bltsdsubbie Do you think that any other animal of this world would stop and think about the feelings of the animal it's about to eat? NO! They hunt and eat LIVE prey. We, last I checked, are the only animal species of this world who cooks its food. Sure, I cringed when I saw a live lobster being ripped apart, but a bigger part of me was like "That'll be good with butter"! Get over your self-righteous views. I denounce animal cruelty but this is cooking as it's been done for years.
