It's called a guinea fowl. In togo it's known as a pintard. They are dumber than chickens, but also tastier.

I'm speaking for my friend: he knew french coming in, but the adjustment to Togolese french took about 6 months. Kabye was the language spoken in his village. He learned quite a bit, but was never fluent. That process took a while though.
