80's pop song by the Canadian band Parachute Club. Filmed entirely on the streets of Toronto.
The band consisted of Lorraine Segato on vocals and guitar, Lauri Conger on keyboards and vocals, Billy Bryans on drums, Margo Davidson on saxophone and vocals, Julie Masi on percussion and vocals, Steve Webster on bass and Dave Gray on guitar. Their first album was produced by Daniel Lanois. The song "Rise Up" from that album won a Canadian Juno Award for Single of the Year.

Lyrics:

(Rise up rise up)
Oh rise and show your power
(Rise up rise up)
Were dancing into the sun
(Rise up rise up)
It s time for celebration
(Rise up rise up)
Spirits time has come

We want lovin we want laughter again
We want heartbeat
We want madness to end
We want dancin
We wanna run in the streets
We want freedom to live in this peace
We want power
We want to make it ok
Want to be singin at the end of the day
Children to breathe a new life
We want freedom to love who we please

*Chorus
(Rise up rise up)
Oh rise and show your power
(Rise up rise up)
Everybody dance into the sun
(Rise up rise up)
It s time for celebration
(Rise up rise up)
The spirits time has come

Talkin bout the right time to be workin for peace
Wantin all the tension in the world to ease
This tightrope s gotta learn how to bend
We re makin new plans
Gonna start it again

(Repeat chorus)
Rise up now

It s time, it s time, it s time

(Rise up rise up)
Oh rise and show your power
(Rise up rise up)
But dance into the sun
(Rise up rise up)
It s time for a celebration
(Rise up rise up)
Everbody s time has come
Spirits time has come
Spirits time has come

(Rise up rise up)
Oh rise and show your power
(Rise up rise up)
All dance into the sun
(Rise up rise up)
It s time for a celebration
(Rise up rise up)
Everbody s time has come
Spirits time has come
Spirits time has come
(Rise up rise up)
Oh rise and show your power...

  • I was thrilled to hear that Lorraine Segato would be performing "Rise Up" at Jack Layton's funeral. This is one of the most powerful and inspirational songs ever written and performed. It affected my life profoundly. I can't think of a better musical tribute to Jack. Thank you, Lorraine - it will lift our hearts and spirits in celebration of Jack's life and all life.

  • This song was sung at his wedding to Oliva and so it is fitting that it was chosen for his funeral....for the beginning of their lives together and the end of it. And the band's video was recorded outside of the Roy Thomson back then. Seems it has come full circle. God bless you Jack Layton and hope you can see all this. Wish I could have met you.

  • This is soooooo... Toronto in a good way!!

  • avevo 14 anni

  • @SnakemanisJeff I guess it was pretty good. It won the Juno Award for single of the year in 1984, while the band won for group of the year in 1985.

  • This song could turn the Grinch into a positive person.

This song could be lighting up someones day in this moment.

This song projects a message that the mainstream music scene rarely delivers.

This song is one of the best 80's songs in my opinion. Up there with "why cant we stay together" by mr.secada

  • A classic piece of Canadiana. If not the best, then definitely the most memorable and iconic of all Canadian music videos. I can remember watching this on Video Hits on the CBC back in '83, '84--just after The Kids Of Degrassi Street. It was fun to be young back then--not a struggle, like it is today. (Mr Jack Layton, RIP.)

  • I was in the infantry in Canada in the 80's and nobody liked this tune on the base...so I knew it must be good! LOL.

  • @mommycat25 -- I met Jack. Wonderful man. Kind & tolerant & open human being--he had a strong handshake too! Canada has lost a great Canadian & forward-thinking spirit. RIP Mr Layton--you are missed but your legacy continues upward & forward.

  • Are you sure this was all filmed in Toronto? I was one of the onlookers in the crowd when this video was made, and could swear I was in Detroit at the time.

  • souvenir!! J'adorais (et j'aime encore) cette chanson quand j'étais petite!

  • canadas fame
