In Industrial Tech class at Fremont Middle School, you have a choice to make a 5 inch high, 3 inch wide tower out of balsa wood. In the 4th seven-week Industrial Tech Explorer class, three people made towers.
In third place (this video) was Clayton Shepard, with about 90 pounds held.
In second place was Jesse Kramme, with about 165 pounds held.
In first place was Justin Alley with about 205 pounds held.

  • I don't really think that is a accurate way to measure the force... I am not sure how to explain what I am thinking, but I know that it is being compressed instead of having weight being suspended.

  • Suspension is more accurate then the force you achieve from compression. The size of the tower also affects the outcome. In addition, after a certain level of force it will snap, not because of the weight but because it is not a solid structure. The tower is like a "outline" of a solid and with the force will press, and explode inward or outward.
