hi, ive just download ubuntu but i am stuck on a few things maybe someone can help.....

1. the chat program that links everything together but doesn't connect to facebook, it says authentication failed??

2. How do i/ can i link gmail n hotmail to evolution? or is thunderbird better?

3. is there a peerblocker program or should i just run transmission (is it safe)??

@SHITONASTICK1100 Nice nick...Can't say much about #1 but for #2, gmail can be accessed via pop or imap so is straightforward to add to any email client. I prefer thunderbird though evolution seems to be a lot better now than when I tried it a few years ago. Considering using it full time I am. As for #3, I'm not sure about peerblocking. Privacy isn't a consideration in the bittorrent protocol so I'm not sure how useful peerblocking actually is. Transmission works well as a bt client.

@dsterry owww one more thing, when i connect my laptop to a tv via a hdmi and close my laptop screen it goes black despite changing what closing the lid does in preferences and i cnt stop the sound coming out of the laptop, is this just a problem with ubuntu 10.10? (i have it on suspend when lid closes) i think this means it shudnt turn off but it crashes.

@SHITONASTICK1100 What you want to do is identify what video card and search 'ubuntu 10.10 yourvideocardmodel close laptop screen' and try a few searches like that. I found with a recent nvidia that I had to use their latest driver from their website to get the best performance. Not 100% free software that way but it's progress by some measures. @dsterry i'm using nvidia driver version 195.36.24 which when i check to update the drivers and click accelerate graphics driver and it gives me a pain in the arse message 'SystemError: E:I wasn't able to locate a file for the sun-java6-jre package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package. (due to missing arch)' never mind tho. I'm sure this will all be fixed when they release the final version on october 10th. once again, thanks for your help.

@dsterry Thanks for the reply, I have just started to get my head round the operating system. I love the free software and its whole set up. I decided to use Mozilla thunder bird for the email and i did try moblock but deleted and just run transmission now. facebook also connects now although I haven't done anything different so i have no idea there. Thanks for the video, i wish there were more for the average computer users.

I think you can record your voice as you record with gtk-Recordmydesktop

I haven't used it much but im pretty sure you can.
