Seal bashing 'disgusting' Kiwi entertainment !!
Kaikoura's reputation marred by cruel attack
By Jessica Rowe
A tourist operator believes the reputation of Kaikoura has suffered after a severe attack left 23 seals bludgeoned to dead.
It is not the first place to have attacks against seals, but this is the worst in recent times.
"It's going to have an affect. People will still obviously come to see seals but there's going to be that scar on the back of it saying somewhere in the community it's not living up to its expectation, it's sad," says Matt Chambers from Seal and Swim Kaikoura.
The local mayor says the impact will be far reaching.
"[I'm] disappointed, not just for Kaikoura but for the whole country. People come here for what we've got to offer," says Winston Gray.
Under the Marine Mammals Act, anyone who harms a fur seal or other marine mammal faces penalties of up to six months in jail, or a fine of up to $250,000.
There is also a further fine of $10,000 for every marine mammal the offence is committed against.
Only one person has received jail time under the Act, Harley McKenzie was the leader of a group of three men who threw rocks at a leopard seal.
Last month he was sentenced to four months in prison.
All Black Andrew Hore escaped jail in 2005 when he and two friends shot a fur seal while on a fishing trip, he received $2500 fine.

    whats disgusting are your comments

  • I do feel sorry the seals . However the SPCA needs to show some sympathy towards humans as well . Animals like dogs attack people for no reason at all , and should be shot. So don't protect those animals too much because they do the same to us .

  • The end of the newscast: dockers are considering removing the animals because of the "smell" and they are unsightly and unseemly. Not really a piece that is outraged by the bludgeoning deaths, then, really...

  • That is horrible why would stupid people kill one of New Zealands native animals? Its just disgusting! I really want to bash those people until they die!
